Food Drive
Iron Range Youth for Action is sponsoring a food drive to help support the local food shelf. There is a competition between the elementary grades. While I was in Cherry, my class won 2 years in a row! I would like to carry that on in Babbitt. I am encouraging the students to bring items in by giving 1 extra credit point for each item donated. These points will be applied to the subject with the most need.
The deadline for donating items is December 20th. All nonperishable food items are being accepted!

PartyLite is here!
Hey! I'm sorry I didn't write yesterday. Our orders came in and I was very busy making sure everything was here. Unfortunately, not everything is. There are parts to a few orders missing, so until those are received, I can't let those orders go. If all of a student's order is here, they can be picked up or taken home. A few students took theirs home yesterday and more should go today. In the meantime, my classroom smells wonderful!

Good afernoon!
Today has been a day of working in the computer lab. We worked in Compass this morning for Math. The students are working on decimals.
We were also in the lab for Reading. The students took some time to type their Veteran's letters. These will be mailed to the Minnesota Discovery Center on Monday. If you would like to view these, you are able to go through the exhibit at the Minnesota Discovery Center.
Tomorrow is our Halloween Celebration. The day will be filled with fun activites. The afternoon is going to be split into 2 parts: swimming and a movie. Please be sure to send a swimsuit and towel!

Happy Monday!
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! It was great to come back to school today well rested!
Today's assignments:
Math - P88 1-26 (Multiplying Decimals)
Reading - Wkst 51 (Vocabulary from Zlata's Diary)
Spelling - Wkst 40-41
The students are very talkative! If you could please remind students of the proper way to behave in school, this would be appreciated. I am doing what I can here at school, but a reminder at home is always nice.
Thanks! Have a great evening!

Monday
Well, it is a short week! Only 2 days of school left! We are working on the Metric System in Math. Some of the students had a harder time with this concept. I did go around and ask each student if he or she understood it and helped those who didn't, so I am hoping that everyone understands it!
We are writing letters to our veterans for Reading/Writing. These letters will be sent to the Minnesota Discovery Center to be posted in a display.
Todays assignments:
Math - P83 1-26 and wkbk 2.5
Reading - Veteran's Letter
Spelling - Halloween Word Search
Social - Time For Kids

Happy Friday!
Good afternoon! We have had another successful week! As always, there were a few bumps along the way, but we made it through it in one piece! The Fundraiser money has been collected and the order will be placed once the Partylite consultant receives it. It won't take long for the orders to come in once she receives them.
There were 18 out of 30 students who received late slips this week. Many of these were because students did not put their names on their assignments. By the 6th grade, students should not have a problem putting their name on their papers, so I will continue to give late slips for this. I am hoping to have fewer and fewer of these as the days go by.
We will not have a new spelling list for next week. Instead, we will do fun Halloween related word searches and word scrambles.
Todays work:
Math - P80-81 1-10 Wkbk 2.4
Spelling - Final Test
Reading - Creating our Gallery
Social - Ch 3 Test
Have a great weekend! Enjoy the sunshine, we may not have much more!

10/12/2010
Our assignments today:
Math - P74 1-20, Wkbk 2.1-2.2
Reading - Read Shooting Back, Wkst 47
Spelling - Pre-test
English - One Line Poems wkst
In Minnesota History, the students shared their oral stories. Tomorrow, they will go into different groups and have to tell a story they heard from someone else.
Late slips - There have been some questions on late slips. I will send late slips home for students who turn their work in late (after 8:45 am), if a name is not on it, or if the student doesn't complete the assignment for some reason. I have been told I send home to many, but I feel it is important for the parents to know what is going on in class. Please note, I do not take points off of the assignments. The students only lose their 25 minutes of "Free Time" on Fridays and are in a study hall instead.

TGIF
Happy Friday! We made it through another week! YAY!
We had a Spelling test and a Math test today. I think the students put a lot of effort into both.
The Babbitt Fire Department was visting today and they brought the smoke trailer with them! The students were able to go through a simulation of what a house fire is like and how hard it is to find their way to the window. They were all able to operate the fire extinguisher, too.
Our spelling words for next week are:
country
does
once
beautiful
unusual
unit
fugitive
menu
utilize
sculpture
valuable
thumbprint
museum
universe
luxury
sulfur
customary
suffocate
multicolored
photojournalist
Please take some time to study these words! Those who get zero wrong on the pretest do not have to take the final test.

We had a great day today! The students were very well behaved... until this afternoon. During the morning, the students did a great job at staying on task and working.
Our assignments for the day:
Math - Multiplying and Dividing Integers Packet
Reading - Write an antecdote on your pet and Wkst 36-37
Spelling - Wkst 34
In Science we did the 3rd part to our Investigation on Solutions and Mixtures. The students had evaporated the water from our salt solutions and looked at the crystals today.
Midterms are not being mailed out this year. All grades can be viewed on Parent Portal.
I, also, wanted to remind the students that cell phones are not allowed in class. I understand some students carry them to school, but they are not to be in the classroom or outside during recess/gym/freetime. There have been a few students who have been warned or had their phones taken away. If a phone is taken away, a parent/guardian will need to come and pick it up.
Things to come:
We will be having a Math test on Chapter One on Friday. Tomorrow will be review.
Spelling Final Test on Friday.
Have a great evening!
